Betty Faesen

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Betty Faesen.  She was a faithful supporter of Women’s golf in the Auckland District.

Betty’s association with Auckland District (ADLGA) was :

-          Junior Development Committee 1972, 1973 & 1976

-          NZLGU Selector  1978 - 1981

-          Auckland District Women’s President 1984 – 1985

In 1976, Betty proposed an interclub tournament for low handicap players of 10 and under, teams of 4 to be played off scratch on a Sunday between May & September.  To support this, she offered to donate a trophy.

1977 the first interclub ‘Betty Faesen’ competition was played and won by the Association’s United Team.  8 teams entered.

1984, the Betty Faesen format was changed to gross stableford, teams of 3. Handicaps were up to 12 but single figures if possible.  12 clubs entered teams.

1987, Betty Faesen was changed from gross stableford to handicap stableford.   11 teams entered.

1992, Betty Faesen format reverted to the original off the stick singles match play,   teams of 4.

2018, Betty Faesen format changed to 2 players off the stick and 2 players handicap matchplay.

The ‘Betty Faesen’ interclub competition is still deemed to be the top competition for women’s interclub competition.   Betty enjoyed attending the finals day of these competitions when she could, to meet the players and present her trophy.  Her last visit was 2018.

Betty will be missed but well remembered through her generosity to Women’s golf.
